What is an IOL?

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s lens, which is a natural part of the eye’s aging process. Intraocular lenses, also known as IOLs, eliminate the cloudiness most commonly associated with cataracts.

However, they can also treat natural refractive errors, like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The only way to restore vision affected by cataracts is to have them replaced by IOLs during cataract surgery.

Standard IOLs will provide you with crisp vision at one distance range only, meaning you will need to wear glasses for certain activities. However, premium IOLs can correct vision at all distances and even reduce your need for visual aids!

What Premium IOLs are available at Shepherd Eye Center?

At Shepherd Eye Center, we offer a range of different premium IOLs in order to accomplish a variety of goals.

PanOptix Trifocal

One of these IOL options is the PanOptix Trifocal lens. This lens is an FDA-approved trifocal lens that allows for clear vision at all three distances: far, intermediate, and close-up.

TECNIS Symfony Lens

The TECNIS Symfony Lenses reduce glare and halo incidences and improve vision at most distances. This lens can also be used to treat age-related presbyopia, reducing your dependence on reading glasses.

Vivity EDOF

The Vivity EDOF lens is another trifocal lens that can be an option for others who are not suited for the PanOptix lens. Like the PanOptix lens, the Vivity lens restores vision at all three distances and is blue-light filtering and UV-absorbing.

The Vivity EDOF utilizes non-diffractive technology, eliminating a majority of visual disturbances such as glare, starburst, and halos.

Toric IOL

Those with certain levels of astigmatism will require a toric lens. At Shepherd Eye Center, every premium IOLs offered is available in a toric version.

Toric IOLs reduce the blurry or distorted vision caused by astigmatism. Monofocal, or standard, IOLs are also available in a toric model.

Why Choose a Premium IOL?

Premium IOLs are customized to your individual vision needs and goals prior to surgery. Most patients can return to their regular routine a few days after surgery, but with greatly improved vision!

Standard or monofocal IOLs are typically covered under insurance. While premium lenses are more costly than standard lenses, you will likely save a considerable amount of money by reducing your need for expensive visual aids!

Our cataract surgeons at Shepherd Eye Center have extensive experience with the latest advancements in corrective implant lenses. They can accurately evaluate and recommend the IOL which will best benefit your individual vision needs.
